    Description

Antique Buddhist Burmese Palm Leaf Prayer Manuscript Pali Script
    In excellent Condition
    size 18" wide x 6" tall
This antique Buddhist manuscript from Burma written in the ancient language of Pali contains over 300 pages and is over 100 years old. The palm leaf pages have been painstakingly inscribed in a beautifully precise hand. The manuscript conveys the teachings from the Pali Canon known as Tipitaka, the standard collection of scriptures in Theravada Buddhism, first recorded in writing some 450 years after the death of the Buddha.
The pages are held by wooden pins that pass through small holes, with the original painted wooden covers at each side. The book is then wrapped in an antique woven sash. The pages have retained their 24K gild edge and remain in excellent condition with just a little weathering of the edges of a few leaves.
Complete Buddhist manuscripts are a very rare item today, particularly one in such good condition. See below for details on the ancient tradition of preserving the teachings of the Buddha in writing.
